A city in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in western Germany. Population 102,000 (1995). In the 12th century, it was the site of the royal palace (Palatinate) of Emperor Frederick I (Redbeard), and in the 13th century it was granted imperial city status, but later came under the ownership of the Elector of the Palatinate. Located at a key transportation point between Germany and France, it was often the site of major battles during the Thirty Years' War, the War of the Palatinate Succession, the War of the Spanish Succession, and the French Revolutionary Wars.
