Italian playwright. Born into a noble bourgeois family near Turin. Since his debut work, The Chess Game (1873), he continued to write late romantic works, but under the influence of verismo, he gradually switched to a more realistic style, depicting the emptiness and melancholy of the bourgeois society of the time in works such as Love Sad (1887) and Like Leaves (1900). He also wrote the librettos for Puccini's operas, such as La Bohème (1896), Tosca (1900), and Madame Butterfly (1904).
