...The "uta" of the poets, poets, and poetesses of the Gagaku-ryo was divided into tachiuta and daiuta. Daiuta was a type of song used in ancient court ceremonies and festivals, and some were accompanied by dance. The date of its establishment is unknown, and it is thought that its predecessor was the "Uta-no-sho" that appears in the note of a waka poem from 736 (Tenpyo 8) in Volume 6 of the Manyoshu. However, the first appearance of the daiuta-sho was in the biography of Kosei Shoshu in the article for November 850, Kasho 3 (850), in the Montoku Jitsuroku, which states that Shoshu was good at playing the wakoto, and became the head of the daiuta-sho in 816 (Kōnin 7).
