Mitsuaki Ishikawa
Born: August 18, 1852 (5th year of the Kaei Era) in Edo
[Died] July 30, 1913. Tokyo sculptor. Former name Totaro. Family business was shrine carving for generations. As a child, he learned Japanese painting from Kano Sosen and tusk and horn carving from netsuke master Kikukawa Masamitsu, and showed unparalleled skill. In 1877, he changed his name to Komyo. He received the second prize for outstanding technique at the 2nd Domestic Industrial Exposition in 1881, and became a judge for the 3rd Domestic Industrial Exposition in 1890 and an Imperial Household Artist. Amid the new revival movement in Japanese art at the time, he became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1891, and also devoted himself to guiding the next generation as a senior member of the Tokyo Carving Association. He became a judge for the Bunten exhibition in 1907, and played an important role in the exhibition thereafter. His main works include "White Robed Kannon," which was exhibited at the Chicago World's Fair.

彫刻家。旧名藤太郎。家業は代々宮彫師。幼時,狩野素川に日本画を,根付師菊川正光に牙角彫刻を学び,無類の巧技を示した。 1877年光明と改名。 81年第2回内国勧業博覧会で妙技2等賞を受け,90年第3回同博覧会審査官,帝室技芸員となる。当時の日本美術の新しい復興運動のなかで,91年東京美術学校教授となり,また東京彫工会の元老として後進の指導に尽した。 1907年文展審査員となり,以後文展に重きをなした。主要作品はシカゴ万国博覧会出品の『白衣観音』など。
