Born: August 18, 1852 (5th year of the Kaei Era) in Edo [Died] July 30, 1913. Tokyo sculptor. Former name Totaro. Family business was shrine carving for generations. As a child, he learned Japanese painting from Kano Sosen and tusk and horn carving from netsuke master Kikukawa Masamitsu, and showed unparalleled skill. In 1877, he changed his name to Komyo. He received the second prize for outstanding technique at the 2nd Domestic Industrial Exposition in 1881, and became a judge for the 3rd Domestic Industrial Exposition in 1890 and an Imperial Household Artist. Amid the new revival movement in Japanese art at the time, he became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1891, and also devoted himself to guiding the next generation as a senior member of the Tokyo Carving Association. He became a judge for the Bunten exhibition in 1907, and played an important role in the exhibition thereafter. His main works include "White Robed Kannon," which was exhibited at the Chicago World's Fair.
