A type of woven fabric for rugs. A transliteration of the Chinese word Dantsu (carpet child). A heavy, hand-woven carpet, especially a small, square one, is often confused with a carpet. The method is to tie the wool one stitch at a time by hand to a cotton or linen base thread, then cut it with a knife or scissors to make it stand up. It is very time-consuming and expensive. It originated in India, Persia, and China. The technique was introduced to Japan during the Edo period, and it was first woven at Nabeshima Dantsu in Saga, and then in Sakai and Ako.
