Fujima Kanjuro

Japanese: 藤間勘十郎 - ふじまかんじゅうろう
Fujima Kanjuro

The name of the head of the Fujima school of Japanese dance. The third Kanbei Fujima used the name Kanjuro from 1798 (Kansei 10) to 1819 (Bunsei 2), so he is considered to be the first to use the name, but it is not counted in the Kanjuro family line.

First World

(He was the second in name, and the same applies below. 1796-1840) Fujima Daisuke, the adopted son of Fujima Kanbei the third, took the name Kanjuro in 1831 (Tenpo 2). Known as "Fujima of Kayabacho," he was known as a master choreographer, with works such as "Sho Fudatsuki," "Kasane," and "Tamuya." The second (third) to fifth (sixth) generations were all women, and they moved away from theater choreography.

(7th. 1900-90) He became the apprentice of the 6th Kabuki actor Onoe Baiko. He was known as Onoe Baio, but was adopted into the Kanjuro family and served as the exclusive choreographer at the Kabukiza Theater before assuming his name in 1927 (Showa 2). He was highly renowned, including for his choreography for the new production of "Fuji Musume" by the 6th Onoe Kikugoro, and was also a master of dance who devoted himself to simple dancing, leading and reigning over the world of Kabuki and dance. In 1990 (Heisei 2), he had his eldest daughter assume the name of the 7th, and he himself became the 2nd Kanso, but passed away shortly thereafter. In 1960 (Showa 35), he was designated a Holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure), in 1979 a Person of Cultural Merit, and in 1982 was awarded the Order of Culture.

7th

(8th. 1945-) The eldest daughter of the 6th (7th) generation. Following her father, she began choreographing for the Kabuki world from a young age, and also continued her own group as a dancer. In 1983 (Showa 58), she succeeded the 7th head of the family under the name of the first Fujima Yasunori. In 1990 (Heisei 2), she took on the name of the 7th Kanjuro. In 2002, she had her eldest son take on the name of the 8th, and she herself became the 3rd Kanso. Her most famous works include "Tsunemasa" and "Kanmaki Dojoji."

8th

(9th generation. 1980-) The eldest son of the 7th generation (8th generation). In 1990 (Heisei 2), he took on the stage name of Yasushi II. He worked with his mother in choreography for the Kabuki world. In 2002, he took on the stage name of Kanjuro 8th generation.

According to one theory, the second Kanjuro's disciple, Kamesaburo (?-1877), became the third Kanjuro after the death of the second and choreographed for theaters, but he was called "Kamesa Kanjuro" or "Yagurashita Kanjuro" and is not included in the algebra.
