Dalton discovered the law of multiple proportions (1802), which states that when two elements A and B combine to form two or more compounds, the weight of B that combines with a certain amount of A in each compound forms a simple integer ratio. Dalton believed that these two empirical laws could be explained by considering that substances are made up of atoms that cannot be divided any further, and developed his atomic theory in Volume 3 of A New System of Chemical Philosophy (1808-27). According to Dalton, in a binary compound consisting of two elements A and B, as a rule, one atom each of A and B combined in a ratio of 1:2 or 2:1 depending on the time. …
