…The body is completely enclosed on both sides by a bivalve-like carapace or shell, which allows the body to be completely contained within, and so it is sometimes mistaken for a small bivalve. They are also called ostracods or ostracods. They are small crustaceans with shells measuring about 0.5 to 2.5 mm, and there are many species in both freshwater and marine environments.
