A school of German painting in the first half of the 16th century. It was centered in the Danube region of southern Germany. The common expression of this school, known as Danube romanticism, is characterized by dramatic depictions of the interaction between nature and humans in the mysterious and romantic landscapes of the forested region. Representative painters include Altdorfer and Wolf Huber (1485-1553). Huber, a painter from Passau, is known for his masterpieces, including the altarpiece "Lamentation" for the parish church of Feldkirch in Austria, and "The Flight into Egypt" (Berlin Gemäldegalerie). The influence of this school can also be seen in the early works of Cranach the Elder and Jörg Breu the Elder (c. 1475-1537). The Augsburg painter Breu's masterpiece is the "Bernhard Altar" in the Zwetl Cathedral. In the world of prints, there is Augustin Hirschvogel (1503-53), who was born in Nuremberg and died in Vienna.
