A title that indicates the status of a shrine. There are distinctions between Jingu, Miya, Taisha, Jinja, and Sha. Ise Jingu is sometimes called Daijingu, but the correct term is Jingu. In the Engishiki, there were only a few shrines such as Kashima and Katori as Jingu and Usa and Hakozaki as Miya. As the names gradually became confused, they were reorganized during the Meiji period. Jingu was limited to shrines with a long history, the Hyuga shrine that enshrines the three generations of imperial ancestors, and the six imperial shrines with prominent imperial virtues, Miya to shrines with a long history and shrines dedicated to the imperial family, and Taisha to Izumo Taisha. After the war, some Taisha titles came into use.

神社の社格を表す称号。神宮・宮・大社・神社・社の区別がある。伊勢神宮に限って〈大神宮〉と呼ぶ場合があるが，正しくは〈神宮〉とのみ称する。《延喜式(えんぎしき)》では神宮は鹿島・香取，宮は宇佐・筥崎(はこざき)など数社にすぎなかった。のち次第に乱れたため，明治時代に整理された。神宮は由緒ある神社，日向(ひゅうが)三代の皇祖をまつる社と皇徳顕著な６皇霊社に，宮は由緒ある神社，皇族奉祀社に，大社は出雲大社に限られた。戦後は大社号もいくつか使用されるようになった。
