Poetry - Eibutsu-shi (English)

Japanese: 詠物詩 - えいぶつし（英語表記）yŏng wù shī

The name of a Chinese style of poetry. Written poetry has been practiced since the Book of Songs, but it was during the Qi and Liang dynasties of the Six Dynasties that complete poems of poetry began to be composed. These poems are themed on the names of objects, from plants, trees, birds, and animals in nature to everyday objects, and people put a lot of effort into how to best describe the subject, and many were written competitively at literary conferences held by those in power. There is not much to behold in terms of content, but the advanced expressive techniques were passed down to the Tang dynasty and absorbed into the poetry of Li Bai and Du Fu. [Morino Shigeo]

中国の詩体名。詠物は《詩経》以来おこなわれていることであるが，一編のまとまった詠物詩が作られるようになったのは，六朝の斉･梁代においてである。自然の草木鳥獣から身辺の器物に至る，物名を題とした詩のことで，対象をいかに巧みに描写するかに人々は心を砕き，多くは権力者の下に開かれた文会で競作された。内容的に見るべきものは少ないが，高度な表現技巧は唐代に受けつがれ，李白･杜甫の詩に吸収されていった。【森野繁夫】
