A village in Shimohei County facing the Pacific Ocean in northeastern Iwate Prefecture. Population 4,806 (1995). The hilly mountain range that is part of the Kitakami Highlands drops into the Pacific Ocean with coastal terrace cliffs of about 200m, forming magnificent scenic spots such as Kitayamazaki and Unosu Cliffs, which are part of Rikuchu Kaigan National Park. The V-shaped valley that stretches from the coast is extremely steep and once prevented communication between settlements, but communication has improved since the opening of National Route 45. Inshore fishing is carried out mainly at Isohama and Shimakoshi fishing ports, and seaweed farming is also thriving. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
