…The origin of the word is unclear, but it was originally an 18th-century slang for a shoemaker, and was then used by Cambridge University officials to refer to ordinary townspeople. In the 19th century, it became a derogatory term for people of lower classes and those with poor upbringing and taste. After WM Thackeray completed his serial essay series, English Snobs, in 1847, the word became widely known not only in English-speaking countries, but also in other countries. For example, it was adopted directly into French, and even the word "snobisme" was created. …
