Extremadura (English spelling)

A region on the central coast of Portugal. It includes the southern district of Leiria, the northern district of Lisbon, and the northern district of Setubal. Grape and wheat cultivation is popular in the area around Lisbon on the north bank of the Tagus River estuary, and famous resorts such as Sintra and Estoril are located near the coast. Large grape and cork plantations were established in Setubal District on the south bank around 1850, and rice fields were developed further south in the Sado River basin in the 1960s. It is a base for sardine fishing and is home to cities such as Setubal, the center of the canning industry, and Nazaré, a fishing port in the north.
