Simonov was the chief director of the Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow, Russia, for two generations. His father, Ruben Nikolaevich Simonov (1899-1968), was also famous as an actor. He became a student of Vakhtangov at the Third Research Theatre of the Moscow Art Theatre, the predecessor of the theatre. After his teacher's death, who sought a festive form of theatrical expression appropriate to the new era after the October Revolution, Simonov established his own research theatre from 1928 to 1937 in an attempt to carry on his teacher's wishes, but was unable to fully develop his teacher's teachings due to the criticism of formalism that had become dominant in the Soviet art world in the 1930s.

ロシア，モスクワのワフタンゴフ劇場の親子2代にわたる首席演出家。父ルーベンRuben Nikolaevich Simonov(1899‐1968)は俳優としても有名。同劇場の前身，モスクワ芸術座第三研究劇場でワフタンゴフの弟子となる。十月革命後の新時代にふさわしい祝祭的演劇表現を模索した師の死後，その遺志を発展させようと1928‐37年，自ら研究劇場をつくったりしたが，30年代にソ連芸術界に支配的になった形式主義批判のために師の教えを十分に発展させ得なかった。
