Born: November 15, 1915, Petrograd [Died] August 28, 1979, Moscow Soviet novelist and playwright. He started out as a poet in the late 1930s, but served as a war correspondent during World War II, and rose to fame with his play Russkie lyudi (Russian People) (1942), which depicts unknown heroes on the battlefield, and his novel Dni i nochi (43-44), which depicts the Battle of Stalingrad. After the war, he published a number of plays, including Russkii vopros (Russian Problems) (46), which was themed around the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, and Tovarishchi po oruzhiyu (52), a full-length novel depicting the Nomonhan Incident. He also promoted the party's literary policy as secretary of the Writers' Union (54-59). After Stalin's death, he enthusiastically supported Thaw as editor-in-chief of the magazine Novyi Mir. The series of Comrades in Arms includes the masterpieces Zhivye i mërtvye (59) and Soldatami ne rozhdayutsya (64), which caused a stir with their frank portrayal of Stalin's mistakes in World War II and the tragedies that resulted from them.
