A city in the southeastern Echigo Plain in central Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center is a settlement at the mouth of the Kariyata River, a tributary of the Shinano River. During the Bunsei era, the city produced Mitsuke Yuki Tsumugi silk and developed into a textile manufacturing area. After World War II, the city produced a lot of chemical fibers and knitwear, which account for about 30% of the city's manufacturing shipment value. The Shinetsu Main Line runs through the city. The Mitsuke oil field was located in the Kuzumaki area. The Imamachi area is famous for its specialty calligraphy brushes and sake, and the kite battles that take place in June between the Imamachi area and Nakanoshima-cho (now Nagaoka City) on the opposite bank of the Kariyata River. 新潟県中部,越後平野南東部の市。1954年市制。中心市街は信濃川の支流刈谷田川の渓口集落で,文政年間見附結城紬(ゆうきつむぎ)を産して以後機業地として発展した。第2次世界大戦後は化学繊維,ニット製品を多産,市の製造品出荷額の約3割を占めている。信越本線が通じる。葛巻地区に見附油田があった。今町地区は特産の毛筆,酒と6月に刈谷田川対岸の中之島町(現・長岡市)との間で行われる凧(たこ)合戦で有名。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。77.91km2。4万1862人(2010)。
