Belfort is the capital of the eastern French district, located between the Vosges and Jura mountain ranges. It developed as the castle of the Count of Montbéliard in the 13th century. It later became part of Austria, and in 1648 became part of France under the Treaty of Westphalia. Since the construction of the fortress by Vauban in the 17th century, it has been known as an impregnable castle, and has endured numerous sieges, including a 103-day siege by the Prussian army in 1870. The large lion statue commemorating this is famous. When Alsace was annexed by Germany, many Alsatians flowed into the area, which became the basis for industrial development. Currently, an industrial area has been formed around the cities of Belfort and Montbéliard, and in addition to the traditional textile industry, electrical machinery, metals, and railway vehicle industries are thriving. Population 1913 (1990) 50,000. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
