Shimobashira (Frost pillar) - Keiskea japonica

Japanese: シモバシラ(霜柱) - シモバシラ(英語表記)Keiskea japonica
Shimobashira (Frost pillar) - Keiskea japonica
A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family, endemic to Japan. It grows under forests in mountainous areas in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu west of the Kanto region. It is about 60 cm tall, has four ridges, and has broad lanceolate, acutely pointed leaves 10 to 20 cm long, arranged in pairs. The veins are covered with fine hairs, and the undersides have glandular dots. In autumn, it forms racemes at the tips of the stems and in the leaf axils, and produces many small white lip-shaped flowers on only one side. Its name comes from the fact that ice forms on the winter-dead stems, making them look like frost pillars.
