The former is called repeating a course, and the latter is called postponing graduation. Reasons for this include (1) voluntarily repeating a course to achieve a goal such as the bar exam, (2) not being able to acquire credits due to lack of academic ability or insufficient attendance due to illness or studying abroad, and (3) not having a clear reason.
