Japanese: フウチョウボク（英語表記）Capparis formosana Hemsl.

A glabrous shrub of the Capparisaceae family. The stipules are thorny, and the leaves are cardboard-like, oblong, and about 10 to 15 cm long. Several flowers appear in the axils at the ends of the branches, and are white when in bloom, eventually turning red. There are four petals and many longer stamens (about 3 cm long). There is one pistil, and the ovary contains several ovules. It grows in secondary forests in southern Taiwan (Hengchun Peninsula), and its wood is hard, so it is used for printing ink. There are about 250 species of Capparis , distributed throughout the world, mainly in the tropics and even in warmer regions.
