This is a Jodo Shinshu Honganji temple in Naniwa-ku, Osaka. Its mountain name is Kusakayama. It was originally a Tendai temple called Muryoju-in. It was founded in 603 (Suiko 11) when Prince Shotoku was building Shitennoji Temple. Ono no Imoko's eighth son, Takamaro, dug what is now the Itachi River and transported lumber. He later shaved his head and took the name Eisho, and was given the title Muryoju-in by Empress Suiko. The 27th head priest, Jokyo, converted to Shinshu, and in 1507 (Eisho 4) Joku rebuilt the temple and named it Gansenji. There is a garden on the temple grounds that is said to have been constructed by Soami. [Ito Yuizan] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
