Shimotsuma Shoushin

Japanese: 下間少進 - しもつましょうしん
Shimotsuma Shoushin
[Born] Tenbun 20 (1551)
[Died] May 15, 1616 (Genna 2).
A priest at Hongan-ji Temple and a Noh actor. His real name was Nakataka Shimoma. The Shimoma family were hereditary vassals of the Hongan-ji Temple, and Shoshin was highly trusted by Oda Nobunaga, and was promoted to the rank of Hoin in 1582. Until then, he had learned the Kanze school of art from his father-in-law, Shimoma Tango Mitsuyori, but from this time on he began studying under Konparu Dayu Gyuren, who taught him the important techniques of the Konparu school one after another, and performed nearly 1,200 Noh plays in his lifetime, demonstrating his achievements far surpassing those of his masters. He was also favored by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Hidetsugu, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and many feudal lords were among his disciples. His books include the trilogy Domai Sho, Butai no Zu, and Soden Sho (1596), which are excellent sources for learning about the actual state of Noh performances and the history of its productions in the late Middle Ages.
