Khama, S.

...The European Consultative Council was established in 1920, and the African Consultative Council in 1921. Seretse Khama (1921-1980), the grandson of Khama III and heir to the throne, married a white woman while studying in England, but when he tried to return to South Africa in 1950, he was expelled due to opposition from the racist South African government. In 1956, he renounced his chieftaincy and was allowed to return as a citizen. In 1962, he took an anti-racist stance and founded the Bechuanaland Democratic Party (now the Botswana Democratic Party) and demanded independence.
