Born: 1547, near Seville Died in 1614? Mexican-Spanish author. Author of Guzmán de Alfarache (1599, 1604), a classic villain novel. This work is a valuable clue to the author's life. Born to a prison surgeon, he graduated from the University of Seville and studied medicine at the universities of Salamanca and Alcalá. During the reign of Philip II, he served as a tax collector and auctioneer, but he seems to have become dissolute and lived a wandering life in poverty, and was once imprisoned for not being able to repay his debts. The first part of Guzmán was a great success, selling over 50,000 copies in five years, and was translated into French, English, Italian, and other languages, promoting the popularity of villain novels. However, the widespread piracy did not help his poverty, and he was soon imprisoned again. The second part was published in Lisbon in 1604, but before the third part was published, he traveled to Mexico with his wife and children in 1608, where he died.
