Lanark

An agricultural city in the southeast of Strathclyde County, central Scotland, UK. It was the capital of the former county of Lanarkshire until 1974. Population: 9,778 (1981). Located on a plateau near the right bank of the upper reaches of the Clyde River, it is the center of the surrounding agricultural region and has a cattle market, as well as various industries for leather, agricultural machinery, and textiles. It was founded as a royal city by David I in the 12th century, and since then Scottish kings often lived in the castle and hunted in the surrounding forests. In the 13th century, W. Wallace, who began the fight for independence from England, hid out in a nearby cave.
