This crab belongs to the family Grapsidae, class Crustacea, order Decapoda. It is a representative species of crab that has expanded its habitat from river mouths to land. It is often confused with the red-clawed crab, but this species is uniformly orange-red in color and has a deep notch at the front of the side edge of the carapace. The carapace is 3.5 cm wide and has a slightly broad rectangular outline. The center of the calyx is depressed, and there are four ridges on the line connecting the left and right eyes. The groove separating the stomach region from the heart region is clearly visible. It is distributed from Tokyo Bay through Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, the coast of China, and Southeast Asia to India. It lives in wetlands near the coast and rarely immerses in seawater, but when the larvae are released, they soak in seawater and the larvae grow in the sea for about a month, living as plankton.
