Uku Island

An island in the north of the Goto Islands in western Nagasaki Prefecture. It belongs to Sasebo City. Its area is 24.92 square kilometers. It was originally part of the former Uku Town (area 26.40 square kilometers) along with Terashima and other islands, but was incorporated into Sasebo City in 2006. It is a volcanic island that erupted Mt. Jogatake (259 meters) on a basalt plateau, and reservoirs fed by spring water are distributed on the boundary between the plateau and the volcanic body. The plateaus of Nagasaki-hana and Nogata spread out in the eastern part of the island, and a plain spreads out in the western part. Population 2,878 (2009).

長崎県西部、五島列島の北方にある島。佐世保市(させぼし)に属する。面積24.92平方キロメートル。もとは寺島などの属島とともに旧宇久町（面積26.40平方キロメートル）を形成していたが、2006年（平成18）佐世保市に編入した。玄武岩の台地上に、城(じょう)ヶ岳（259メートル）を噴出した火山島で、台地と火山体の境界線上には、湧水(ゆうすい)による溜池(ためいけ)が分布している。島の東部には長崎鼻や野方(のがた)の台地が広がり、西部には平原の台地が広がっている。人口2878（2009）。
