The city is located in the southwestern corner of Hyogo Prefecture, occupying the middle and lower reaches of the Chikusa River and facing the Harima Nada Sea. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. The Ako Line and Sanyo Expressway pass through the city center, which developed as a castle town for the Asano clan and others. In addition to salt production, which has been carried out since the feudal era, pharmaceutical, textile, steel, metal and cement industries are also active, and the development of the Harima Industrial Region is progressing with the conversion of salt fields into industrial land. There are many historical sites related to the Ako Roshi, such as Oishi Shrine, Hanagakuji Temple, and the former home of Oishi Yoshio (historic site), and there is a municipal marine science museum related to salt and the sea.
