What can be called literary criticism exists in various forms, from Aristotle's Poetics and Horace's Treatise on Poetics to what is now called literary criticism. The purpose of literary criticism is usually to discuss issues related to literary works or their authors. Moreover, in Western countries, especially since the 19th century, literary criticism itself has been established as a field within literature. However, especially in the 1970s, literary criticism with a different character from traditional literary criticism began to appear, and has now become a distinctive field in its own right.

文芸批評と呼ぶことのできるものは，アリストテレスの《詩学》やホラティウスの《詩論》から今日のいわゆる文芸批評にいたるまで，さまざまのかたちで存在する。その文芸批評が目的とするのは，普通には，文学作品かその作者にかかわりのある諸問題について語ることである。しかも西欧の諸国においては，とくに19世紀以降，文芸批評そのものが文学の中のひとつの分野として確立されるにいたった。ところが，とくに1970年代になると，そのような文芸批評の中から，従来の文芸批評とは性格の異なるものが現れはじめて，現在ではひとつの特徴的な分野をなすまでになっている。
