A village in Kuma District, southern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 5,756 (1995). It borders Hitoyoshi City to the southwest. The Kyushu Mountains dominate the northern part of the village, but the alluvial plains of the Hitoyoshi Basin open up in the south. The Kawabe River flows south through the center and empties into the Kuma River, which flows west at the southern end. Three-quarters of the village area is forest, and agriculture and forestry are the main industries, with the cultivation of rice, tobacco, melons, tea, shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and livestock being carried out. 熊本県南部,球磨郡の村。人口5756(1995)。南西は人吉市に接する。北部は九州山地の山々が広く占めるが,南部に人吉盆地の沖積地が開ける。中央部を川辺川が南流し,南端で西流する球磨川に注ぐ。村域の3/4は山林で農林業を主とし,米,タバコ,メロン,茶,シイタケ,たけのこの栽培,畜産などが行われる。五木村境の藤田には川辺川ダムの建設が計画されている。【松橋 公治】
