〘Noun〙① Three wheels. ② Buddhist term. (a) Three wheels that are said to exist beneath the earth and support it. That is, the wind wheel is at the bottom, the water wheel above the wind wheel, and the gold wheel above the water wheel. (b) The three wheels of impermanence, impurity, and suffering, which are the source of the cycle of transmigration in this world, are impermanence, impurity, and suffering. [Sonkaku-hogo (1356)] (c) The Buddha's teaching work is grasped in terms of the three actions of body, speech, and mind, and is likened to the wheel of the Wheel-Turning King. Puppeteer (Fujiwara no Sanemitsu) "I wander about and forget the three actions, and the affairs of this world _{do not carry me} thousands of miles" (d) This is saying that there is a difference between the three wheels of the Buddha's teachings. The three are the first turning of the wheel of the Dharma, the wheel of illumination that preaches emptiness, and the wheel of holding the Dharma that preaches ultimate emptiness. (ho) The three in charity: the giver, the recipient, and the offering. Contemplating emptiness and not being attached to these three is called the Three Purified Wheels. [Enzan Waseda Hesuishu (1386)] 3. In the Taokyujutsu , this is the zodiac sign of the day of conception (265 days before the birthday). The year is called the large wheel, the month the middle wheel, and the day the small wheel, and together they are called the three wheels. 4. An abbreviation of "sanrinsha (three-wheeled cart)." *The Shore of Trials (1969-72) by Ogawa Kunio - A black horse telling the new day, "There was a three-wheeled cart going down to Shizuoka, so I gave it a ride."

〘名〙① 三つの輪。② 仏語。(イ) この世界の地下にあって、世界をささえているという三つの輪。すなわち、最下に風輪、風輪の上に水輪、水輪の上に金輪があるとする。(ロ) この世の流転輪廻のもとを無常・不浄・苦の三つに求めた無常輪・不浄輪・苦輪の三つ。〔存覚法語（1356）〕(ハ) 仏の教化のはたらきを、身・口・意の三業(ごう)の上でとらえ、転輪聖王の輪宝にたとえたもの。神通輪・教誡輪・記心輪の三つ。※本朝無題詩（1162‐64頃）二・傀儡子〈藤原実光〉「羈遊殆忘三輪業、世事不_レ営万里躬」(ニ) 仏の説法に三法輪の差があるとするもの。最初の初転法輪と、空を説いた照法輪と、究竟の不空を説いた持法輪の三つ。(ホ) 布施における施者と受者と施物の三つ。この三つに空を観じて執着しないことを三輪清浄という。〔塩山和泥合水集（1386）〕③ 淘宮術(とうきゅうじゅつ)で、受胎年月日（誕生日の二六五日前）の干支。その年を大輪、月を中輪、日を小輪といい、あわせて三輪という。④ 「さんりんしゃ（三輪車）」の略。※試みの岸（1969‐72）〈小川国夫〉黒馬に新しい日を「静岡へ下りる三輪があったもんで、乗せて行ってもらった」
