A city in western Switzerland, close to the French border on the southeastern slope of the Jura Mountains. Population 37,000 (1996). It has been a city of clocks ever since clock manufacturing began in the second half of the 17th century. At first, the production of glass-cased pendulum clocks shifted to pocket watches, and the city achieved industrialization. Since the opening of the railway line between the city and Neuchâtel (1860), it has seen remarkable development and has become a major center of the Swiss clock industry. There is a clock museum (established in 1902) that exhibits many types of clocks from the 16th century onwards. [Morita Yasukazu] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
