1750?-1808 Ottoman military officer and politician. He was recognized for his work in the Janissaries, and was later appointed ayan of Rustyuk (now Ruse, Bulgaria). In 1807, the Janissaries rebelled in Istanbul against the "new order" of Selim III (reigned 1789-1807). When Selim III was dethroned, he led his troops to the capital, suppressed the Janissaries, installed Mahmud II on the throne, and became Grand Vizier himself (1808). He then tried to carry out reforms in accordance with Selim III's will, but incurred the wrath of the Janissaries, and was attacked by them, leading to his suicide.
