Japanese: シメオン(英語表記)Simeon, Charles
Simeon, Charles
Born: 24 September 1759, Reading
Died November 13, 1836. A Cambridge Anglican clergyman. A leader in evangelism, he had an indelible influence on the religious life of Cambridge. Educated at King's College, Cambridge, he served as vice-principal (1790-92). Influenced by H. Benn and J. Benn, he entered Trinity Church, Cambridge in 1782, and served as a minister there until his death. He was one of the leading members of the Church of England, and devoted himself to evangelism, especially to India, where he sent the best of his class, including Henry Martin. He helped establish the Church Missionary Society (99). He also participated in the British and Foreign Bible Society, promoted missionary activities with his own money, and founded the Simeon Trost Foundation (1816) to continue evangelism.

Simeon
Simeon

A character in the Old Testament. The second son of Jacob and Leah. Ancestor of the tribe of the same name among the 12 tribes of Israel (Genesis 35:23, Exodus 1:2, etc.). He was one of the 10 men who followed the orders of their father Jacob to go to Egypt in search of grain, and accepted the terms of exchange offered by his brother Joseph, who was governor over all of Egypt at the time, and became a hostage until his brother Benjamin was brought from Canaan to Egypt (Genesis 42:24). The tribe moved south to Canaan and seems to have settled at the southernmost end of the 12 tribes of Israel (Joshua 19:1-9), but was a small and inconspicuous tribe and was probably eventually absorbed into the tribe of Judah.

Simeon

A devout man in Jerusalem who had been waiting for the Savior through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. He met Jesus accompanied by his parents in the temple and recognized the infant as the Savior. He sang a hymn to God, "Nunc dimittis," and prophesied to Jesus and Mary about his future (Luke 2:25-35).
