864‐927 Prince of Bulgaria (reigned 893-913 or 918) and Emperor (reigned 913 or 918-927). Third son of Boris I. Educated in Constantinople, he was promoted to Duke after his brother was deposed. At the same time, the capital was moved from Pliska to Preslav in eastern Bulgaria. A man of great learning, he was also an excellent politician, working to Christianize the country and strengthen its power. He defeated the Byzantine army and neighboring countries in many battles, and approached Constantinople three times (896, 913, 923) and demanded tribute.
