Next, the translation of “gusei” was used as “understanding” in 1881, and it has also been used as the translation of the German word “Verstand” since the 1890s (in 1885, “rikairyoku” was used as the translation of “Verstand”, and in 1896, “kaisei” was used as the translation of “Verstand”). The translation of intellect was “chiryoku” in 1881, and “chisei” and “chino” were added in the 1890s.
