Next, the translation of “gusei” was used as “understanding” in 1881, and it has also been used as the translation of the German word “Verstand” since the 1890s (in 1885, “rikairyoku” was used as the translation of “Verstand”, and in 1896, “kaisei” was used as the translation of “Verstand”). The translation of intellect was “chiryoku” in 1881, and “chisei” and “chino” were added in the 1890s. From the end of the 1900s, “chisei” was established, while the use of “chino” to mean “intelligence” increased (in 1886, Nakae Chomin translated intelligence as “chi” or “chi no fukan”). …
