A mushroom of the family Shimejiaceae in the order Matsutake, order Amaranthaceae. Two species, Honshimeji (Daikokushimeji) L. aggregatum and Shakashimeji (Senbonshimeji) L. fumosum , are particularly well-known edible fungi. Both are mycorrhizal fungi that grow in colonies on the ground under forests in summer and autumn. The caps are round, then flattened, dark, gray, or light gray-brown in color, and feel dry without any viscosity. The former grow in colonies, but each one is independent, and the stalks are noticeably swollen at the bottom, which differs from the latter, whose stalks remain thin and often fuse together.

担子菌類マツタケ目シメジタケ科のキノコ。ホンシメジ (ダイコクシメジ) L. aggregatum，シャカシメジ (センボンシメジ) L. fumosumの2種が特に有名な食用菌である。いずれも夏秋の頃に，林下の地上に叢生する菌根菌である。傘はまんじゅう形，のちに平らになり，色は暗色，灰色，淡灰褐色で粘性はなく乾いた感じがする。前者は叢生しても1本ずつが独立し，柄は下端は著しくふくれるので，柄が細いままでしばしば互いに合着する後者とは異なる。
