Simurgh (English spelling)

Japanese: シームルグ（英語表記）Sīmurgh

A legendary monster bird that appears in Iranian mythology. In ancient Persian it was called Saena-murgo, and in medieval Persian it was called Sen-muru. It is a composite of a dog's head, a lion's legs, an eagle's wings and body, and a peacock's tail. It is said to live in the Saena tree in Lake Walkasha, bring the seeds of all plants to the earth, and protect children and heroes. In art after the Sassanid dynasty, it was used as a symbol of good fortune to decorate the clothing of royalty and nobility, the crowns of queens, and so on. [Tanabe Katsumi]

イラン神話に登場する伝説上の怪鳥。古代ペルシア語でサエーナ･ムルゴー，中世ペルシア語でセーンムルウと呼ばれた。犬の頭，獅子の脚，ワシの翼と体，クジャクの尾などより合成されている。ウォルカシャ湖中のサエーナ樹に住み，あらゆる植物の種子を地上にもたらし，また，子どもや英雄の守護をするといわれた。ササン朝以後の美術で，吉祥の象徴として王侯貴族の衣服，王妃の王冠などの装飾に用いられた。【田辺勝美】
