Abbreviated as "JAEA". A special corporation established in 1956 based on the Atomic Energy Basic Law. As the central institute for atomic energy research in Japan, it is involved in basic and applied research on atomic energy, the design, construction and operation of nuclear reactors, the training of atomic energy researchers and engineers, and the import, production and distribution of radioisotopes. In 1985, it merged with the Japan Atomic Energy Ship Development Corporation. Its headquarters are in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture. In addition to the Tokai Research Center in Tokai Village, Ibaraki Prefecture, it also has the Takasaki Research Center, Naka Research Center, Oarai Research Center, Kansai Research Center and Mutsu Office. As a core research institute for atomic energy research and development in Japan, it is also actively engaged in international research cooperation and joint research. In October 2005, it merged with the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Development Institute to become the independent administrative institution, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency.

略称原研。原子力基本法に基づき，1956年に設立された特殊法人。日本の原子力研究の中心機関で，原子力に関する基礎・応用研究，原子炉の設計・建設・操作，原子力に関する研究者・技術者の養成訓練，放射性同位元素の輸入・生産・頒布等を行う。1985年日本原子力船開発事業団を合併。本部千葉県柏市。茨城県東海村の東海研究所の他に高崎研究所，那珂研究所，大洗研究所，関西研究所，むつ事業所をもつ。日本の原子力研究開発の中核的研究機関であるとともに国際的な研究協力や共同研究も盛んに行っている。2005年10月，核燃料サイクル開発機構と統合し，独立行政法人・日本原子力研究開発機構となった。
