[Died] July 18, 1876. German literary scholar and poet. As a professor at the University of Bonn, he made a great contribution to the study of ancient Germanic and medieval German literature and to translating them into modern Japanese. As a poet, he excelled in Uhlant-style ballads. He translated many works, including the Nibelungenlied (1827) and Das Heldenbuch (6 volumes, 43-49), as well as Gedichte (44, 63).
