Mitre, Bartolomé
Born: June 26, 1821, Buenos Aires
Died January 18, 1906. Buenos Aires. Argentine politician, soldier, and historian. President (in office 1862-68). He fled his home country due to his liberal views, and lived in Uruguay in the 1830s. After the fall of dictator J. Rosas in 1852, he returned to the country and became a powerful leader in Buenos Aires Province. In 1861, he defeated the federal forces led by J. Urquiza in the Battle of Pabon, and succeeded in unifying the country. In 1862, he became the first president of the unified state. During the Paraguayan War, he led the combined forces of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay as commander-in-chief. In 1870, he founded the newspaper La Nación. His main work was Historia de San Martín (1887-88).
