Shimura ginseng (English name) Pterygopleurum neurophyllum (Maxim.) Kitagawa
A perennial plant of the Umbelliferae family that grows in marshes in fields (illustration). The Japanese name comes from the fact that it was common in Shimura-no-hara, Tokyo. The stem is erect, 80-100 cm tall, and slightly ridged. The roots are white and somewhat fleshy. The leaves are twice trilobed, with slender lobes 2-6 mm wide and somewhat hard. The flowers bloom in August and September in compound umbels at the ends of the upper branches, and are small and white. There are 8-10 small umbels with linear bracts. There are five petals that roll inward at the tips. The fruit is elliptical, about 4 mm long, with small triangular calyx teeth at the tip, and an oil tube runs between each of the raised ribs on the surface.
