A state in southwestern Saudi Arabia, the Asir Mountains run along the Red Sea towards Yemen, with their highest peak at about 2,900m above sea level. There are three types of climate: alpine, steppe and desert. Summer temperatures are warm, ranging from 20 to 32°C, and the region receives 300 to 320mm of rainfall only in summer. In addition to oasis irrigation agriculture, the region is the only one in the country to practice rain-fed irrigation agriculture, with terraced fields on the mountain slopes. The Tihama coastal plain facing the Red Sea is the most fertile land, and has a natural harbor. Forests of mulberry trees (genus Juniperus) grow, as do olive, indigo, fig and mottled berries, and baboons live here.
