Transplanting animal organs or cells into humans. Xenotransplantation is being studied worldwide as a way to solve the shortage of organ transplants from humans. Pig organs and cells are the main target, and technology that can avoid strong rejection reactions even when using these has been put into practical use, and in recent years, xenotransplantation has begun to be applied to human treatment overseas. According to the WHO, there have already been 34 clinical studies on xenotransplantation worldwide. In response to this situation, in April 2016, a research team from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced a review of the "Guidelines on infectious disease issues associated with xenotransplantation." In response to this, a domestic research group is planning to transplant pig cells into a type 1 diabetes patient in a few years. The previous guidelines created by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare research team in 2001 called for strict management, such as lifelong follow-up observation, saying, "We are not yet at the stage where we can guarantee that unknown infectious diseases will not occur, and difficult-to-predict problems remain," and xenotransplantation was virtually impossible to carry out.

動物の臓器や細胞を人に移植すること。異種移植は人からの臓器移植の提供不足を解決する手段として世界で研究されている。ブタの臓器や細胞が主な対象となっており、これらを用いても強い拒絶反応を避けることのできる技術が実用化され、近年、海外では人の治療に応用され始めている。WHOによると、世界の異種移植についての臨床研究は既に34の事例報告がある。この状況を受け、2016年4月、厚生労働省の研究班は｢異種移植に伴う感染症問題に関する指針｣の見直しを表明した。これを受け、国内の研究グループは数年後にも1型糖尿病の患者にブタ細胞の移植を計画している。厚労省研究班が01年度に作成した従来の指針では｢未知の感染症の発生が起こらないことを保証できる段階になく、予測困難な問題が残されている｣として、移植した際には生涯にわたる経過観察を課すなど厳重な管理を求めており、異種移植は事実上、実施できなかった。
