Dutch navigator and explorer. He served as a captain for the Dutch East India Company, and left Batavia (Jakarta) on an expedition in 1642-43. He "discovered" what is now Tasmania, southeast of Australia, and named it Van Diemen's Land after the Governor of the East Indies at the time. He then sailed east to the west of New Zealand, which he named Statenland, and then traveled north to discover Tonga, Fiji, the Bismarck Islands, and other islands, before returning to Batavia via the northern coast of New Guinea. In 1644, he embarked on another expedition to investigate the areas he had explored the previous time. After a voyage to the Philippines and Thailand in 1648, he incurred the discontent of his crew and was fired from the company. He then lived as a wealthy merchant in Batavia, where he died.
