Hanayagi school

Japanese:
Hanayagi school

A school of Japanese dance. Its headmaster's name is Hanayagi Jusuke, and the current head is the fifth generation. The first headmaster was Nishikawa Yoshijiro, a disciple of the 4th head of the Nishikawa school, Senzo, but after his master's death there was internal conflict and he became independent and founded the school under the name Hanayagi Yoshijiro in 1849 (Kaei 2). After going through the name Hanayagi Jusuke, he took the name Hanayagi Jusuke. He was active as a leading theater choreographer from the end of the Edo period to the first half of the Meiji period, but he fell out with the 9th head Ichikawa Danjuro, retired from the world of theater, and passed away in 1903 (Meiji 36). As the first headmaster's biological son Hanayagi Yoshisaburo was young, his adopted son, the first head Hanayagi Tokutaro, took over as head of the school and supported the style. Yoshisaburo took the name Hanayagi Jusuke, the second head of the school, in 1918 (Taisho 7). He established the Hanayagi Dance Research Society with the aim of creating a new era of Japanese dance, while also launching the Nijuyonka-kai, a group for studying classical dance, and made other fulfilling steps. He was appointed as a choreographer for the Kabukiza Theatre, and continued to be active in this field for a while. Tokutaro and the 4th Hanayagi Yoshijiro (later known as Hodo) assisted Jusuke as a branch of the school, while Yoshijiro consolidated his position in the Kansai region. A diverse range of talented people were produced, and the school's disciples spread throughout the country, developing into the largest school in the field. In 1963 (Showa 38), the 2nd head took the name Juo, and his daughter Wakaba succeeded him as the 3rd head of the school, with the 2nd head's brother-in-law Juraku and the 5th head Yoshijiro (who took the name Jusuke, the 4th head of the school in 2007, and the 2nd head Juo, in 2016) assisting him as guardians. After the death of the third in 2007, the fifth head, Yoshijiro, became the fourth head of the school. The schools that branched off from the Hanayagi school include the Wakayagi school, the Gojo school, the Saruwaka school, and the Izumi school.
