The story is based on the idea that Minamoto no Yoritomo ordered Hatakeyama Shigetada to have the feudal lords and minor lords of Kamakura enter the Hitoana cave on Fuji to distinguish between those skilled in the arts and martial arts and those who were simply ignorant. He then exposed them to the Seven Hot Springs of Hakone in an attempt to turn them into either scholars or martial artists, thereby punishing and admonishing the weak.
