Silver salt photography

Japanese: 銀塩写真 - ぎんえんしゃしん（英語表記）silver salt photography

A general term for photography that uses silver salts such as silver halide, silver nitrate, silver azide, and silver tungstate as photosensitive materials. It began in 1727 when German Johann Heinrich Schulze (1687-1744) discovered the photosensitivity of silver nitrate. In 1839, Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre invented the daguerreotype. Today, in contrast to digital photography using digital cameras, photographic film or photographs printed from film onto photographic paper are called silver halide photography (→printing).

感光物質としてハロゲン化銀をはじめ硝酸銀，アジ化銀，タングステン酸銀などの銀塩を用いた写真法の総称。1727年ドイツ人ヨハン・ハインリヒ・シュルツェ（1687～1744）が硝酸銀の感光性を発見したことに端を発する。1839年ルイ＝ジャック＝マンデ・ダゲールが銀板写真法（ダゲレオタイプ）を発明。今日ではデジタルカメラによるデジタル写真に対し，写真フィルムやフィルムから印画紙に焼き付けた写真のことを銀塩写真と呼んでいる（→焼き付け）。
