Gentaro Shimura

Japanese: 志村源太郎 - しむらげんたろう

1867-1930 A bureaucrat and banker from the Meiji to early Showa periods.
Born on March 1, 1867. Older brother of Watanabe Yoshio. After serving as a professor at the Tokyo Agricultural and Forestry School (now the University of Tokyo), he joined the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, becoming Director General of the Construction Bureau. After retiring from the ministry, he became President of the Industrial Bank of Japan in 1911. In 1922, he became a member of the House of Peers. He served on various government committees, and contributed to the establishment of the Tenant Farming Act and the development of industrial associations. He passed away on August 23, 1930. He was 64 years old. He was born in Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture). He graduated from the Imperial University.

慶応3年3月1日生まれ。渡辺義郎(よしお)の兄。東京農林学校(現東大)教授をへて農商務省にはいり,工務局長となる。退官後,明治44年日本勧業銀行総裁。大正11年貴族院議員。各種の政府委員をつとめ,小作法案の制定や産業組合育成につくした。昭和5年8月23日死去。64歳。甲斐(かい)(山梨県)出身。帝国大学卒。
